Malaysia

Dr. Donny Yawah is a Malaysian wildlife veterinarian actively involved in the Wildlife Reproductive Biotechnology Programme (WRBP) under the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN), a long-term initiative focused on developing and applying assisted reproductive technologies to support the conservation of Malaysia’s endangered wildlife. The programme emphasizes techniques such as semen collection, cryopreservation, hormonal monitoring, and artificial insemination, and targets key species including the Malayan tapir (Tapirus indicus), Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni), and gaur (Bos gaurus). As part of the WRBP team, Dr. Donny contributes to reproductive assessments, technical protocol development, and field implementation, while also supporting national capacity building through training and collaboration with academic and conservation partners. These efforts aim to strengthen scientific understanding, improve management practices, and enhance reproductive success in captive breeding programmes. WRBP also supports national initiatives such as the Malayan Tapir Conservation Action Plan (2021–2030) and the Save the Malayan Tiger campaign, contributing to a holistic approach in addressing the decline of critically endangered species. Through this integrated, multidisciplinary effort, Dr. Donny and the WRBP team continue to advance science-based conservation strategies to preserve genetic diversity and ensure the long-term survival of Malaysia’s iconic wildlife.
